What is a Milestone

A milestone signifies an important accomplishment or a major phase of work that contributes to achievement of a bigger goal. In the Goals app, which is based on OKR methodology, milestones are Key Results and Sub-Key Results.

Acting as milestones, Key Results and Sub-Key Results help you monitor the progress and make sure your team is on the right track. Milestones ensure you always have a big-picture view of your project. Without milestones, you are just monitoring tasks and risk losing the way.

When you set an Objective and start a project, milestones can greatly help with the correct scheduling of works. They break your Objective into digestible chunks and boost chances of success.

Get visual

Visualizing your milestones enhances your planning and helps you ensure nothing is lost or forgotten. In the Goals app, you can visualize your milestones (Key Results and Sub-Key Results) on the Objective Map and see your entire project at a glance.

Monitor the progress

Large and complex projects need constant monitoring to be successful. Key Results and Sub-Key Results are helpful in verifying if your team is on the right track, especially if these milestones are set as deadlines for important deliverables.

Communicate with team

Project success comes hand in hand with proper team communication. Team meetings encourage members to clarify questions and concerns and adjust due dates of tasks and milestones if required.

Conduct check-ins with employees

Besides feedback from the entire team, check-ins with individual members can help to track progress and assist them in sticking to the schedule.

How to Add a Key Result in the Goals App

Click on the necessary Objective to get to the Objective Map tab.

On the Objective Map, click the + button next to the Objective and press Create Key Result.

Enter the Key Result details which may include Name, Description, Assignee, Due Date, Budget, and KPI.

That’s it! If you want to split the Key Result into Sub-Key Results or Tasks, click the + button next to this Key Result and choose the desired option.

Due Date vs. Milestone

Milestone is a specific point in time within your project, that is used to measure progress towards the achievement of your Objective. As mentioned before, due date is the date by which something has to be done. In other words, it is a deadline. While due dates belong to something specific like a Task, milestones are independent items – Key Results and Sub-Key Results in the Goals app. Milestone has a fixed date but no duration, unlike tasks, that have both start and finish dates. Milestones are usually used in project management as reference points marking major events or decision points.

Overview of Due Dates in the Goals App

Due date is a scheduled date on which something is planned to be completed. KeepSolid Goals allows you to add due dates to whatever item you create: a Task, Key Result, or a Sub-Key Result. Besides, you can set a finish date for the entire Objective. It signifies the endpoint when all Tasks and Key Results planned within this Objective should be finished.

The Goals app allows to set both start and due dates for Tasks. Providing time estimation for each Task, you can craft a more accurate plan of your entire project.

Indicate start dates for Tasks and let your team members focus on what’s most important right now, without getting distracted by what is yet to come.

By setting due dates for your Key Results and Tasks, you can easily monitor the progress on different tabs of the app, including Worksheet, Timeline, and Report. Always keep track of what is due and when, as well as who is responsible.

How to Set Due Dates in KeepSolid Goals

In the Goals app, you can set due dates for all items: Tasks, Key-Results, Sub-Key Results, and even the entire Objective. See how to set a due date of an Objective below. In the same way, when creating or editing a different item, you can set its due date.

If you want to set a due date for a new Objective, press the New Objective button and type its name and description. To edit an existing Objective, click on the menu button and press Edit.

Navigate to the field Planned Due Date and set the finish date of your Objective.

If this is a new Objective, click Create Objective. In case you’re editing an existing Objective, the changes will be saved automatically.

How to Set Deadlines You’ll Meet

Break your project down into digestible chunks

In KeepSolid Goals, you can do it by splitting your Objective into Key Results, and Key Results – into Sub-Key Results and Tasks. Then, figure out how long each step will take and set due dates for each. This results in a much more accurate project deadline, than if you try to estimate the whole thing without looking into the details.

Analyze project delays in the past

Think about what previously caused any delays. Were there last-minute changes that took time to implement and how often? Assume that the same issues may occur again, and if possible, spare some time for them in your plan.

Consider other risks

Think about what else could be going on at the same time. A particular task may need just one day to complete, but if it is planned for quite a busy, hectic period, it might need a whole week. A realistic schedule can’t be created in a vacuum, taking into account everything that may interfere with the deadlines set.

Don’t ignore input from others

In case you’re setting deadlines for others, or if you personally rely on somebody else doing their part of the work before you can do yours, talk to them to make sure the deadlines are reasonable.
